Before we commence with all the Jared Allen and Vikings draft hype, the month did have some folks “keeping it real”:
Dan Cole called out Twins broadcasters Bremer and Bert with this comment, “can you say Homer of the Year” after mocking some of their boot-licking behavior.
In contrast to the Wall Street Journals loving up of Ron Gardenhire, Darin “Doogie” Wolfson stated Jim Leyland was the best manager in their division. He also said it will be “embarrassing” if the Gopher football team loses to any of its non-conference opponents.
The Rake’s Britt Robeson pointed out that the defense Randy Foye played this past season was “disappointing”.
The word “insufferable” was used by Chad Hartman to describe the work by Dan Terhaar and Mike Greenlay.
On KSTP radio Patrick Ruesse suggested the Minnesota Wild “haven’t accomplished anything in five years” and “need to win the Colorado series”.
Tim McNiff told Dan “Common Man” Cole that the Vikings “blinked” and could have gotten Jared Allen for only a 1st and 3rd round draft pick (not an additional 3rd).
Even Sid Hartman behaved like his old pal Howard Cosell with this piece of candor, “I don’t understand why the Vikings took a safety (Tyrell Johnson) instead of an offensive lineman.”
Now let’s look at the other side beginning with some crazy name evoking by some of the usual suspects:
Dick Bremer evoked the name of Twins legend Harmon Killebrew when describing Jason Kubel’s swing.
Greg Coleman evoked the legendary 1985 Bears defense when speaking of how the Vikings defense could “mesh” in 2008.
Never one to underplay the future possibilities of his favorite teams, Jeff Dubay conjectured that if Blake Wheeler were to come back for the 2008-2009 college hockey season he would “have a monster year”.
Paul Allen predicted the Gopher men’s hockey team would make the Frozen Four.
Upon hearing that his pal Kevin Gorg was cheering loudly in the press box Ducky excitedly said, “way to fly in the face of the negatives”.
Star/Tribune beat writer Lavelle E. Neal III went a bit overboard with his observation, “Cuddyear is a moving clinic on the bases”.
Glen Sonmor declared “Jacques is a coaching genius” to Chad Hartman prior to another one ‘n done failure in the playoffs.
After some criticism of the Wild by a Denver Post writer, Mark Rosen ironically ask, “He doesn’t have any credibility in that town does he”?
Although the piling on of them was a bit much by other media members and fans, Wild T.V. announcers Dan Terhaar and Mike Greenlay homered it up with a plethora of whining about officiating during the short Wild playoff run.
Prior to the commencement of the playoffs Lou Nanne speculated “the Wild can win it all”. Also, when ask by Dan Barreiro how Nanne could describe the work of Doug Riseborough as “outstanding” he responded with “tough to build a team in hockey”.
Paul Allen predicted big things for a Vikings DE with “I think Ray Edwards is going to be a beast next year”. He also repeatedly predicted that Tarvaris Jackson will be “markedly better” this upcoming season and confidently stated, “I’ll take my chances with T-Jack”.
Jeff Dubay was at his provincial worst with this statement regarding new Viking Jared Allen, “He’s gonna fit into the one of us bit right away”
After free agency and the NFL draft Allen and Dubay predicted the Vikings would win the NFC North.
Winner: Proclaiming that new Vikings Jared Allen is the most “impactful” defensive lineman since Bruce Smith, power tripper Mike Morris gets the nod for Homer of the Month.
Bottom Line: I guess even a fairly consistent “non-homer” can get caught up in all the hype perpetuated by his colleagues in the press…Et tu Superstar? |
