Who: Rod Simons
What Dave Lee led the post Super Bowl provincial cheerleading by declaring it was a “great win for Gopher football” in reference to Tony Dungy and Ben Utecht.
Timberwolve’s web reporter Mike Trudell conducted a fluff piece interview with media darling Matt Birk that included this predictable softball, “So how’s the restaurant going”.
Wolves color analyst Jim Peterson claimed guard Mike James’ play gave him goose bumps (could “Pete” have misspoke and actually meant he was getting hives?).
Mark Rosen was at his cornball best with guests Ben Utecht and his wife (former Gopher golfer and Miss Minnesota) Karyn Stordahl. Could Rosen be establishing two new “media darlings”?
An email contributor to Homersota.com gave us this funny tidbit:
Despite the "regional" nature of the broadcast, Dick Bremer's favoritism was evident when he suggested that Golden Gopher Spencer Tollackson had fouled Wisconsin's Alando Tucker due to his bandaged left hand. Bremer noted the injured hand had caused Tollackson to shift his body weight as he fell, thereby resulting in the foul, yet saving said hand from further damage.
Broken hand aside, Bremer failed to note that Tollackson had lunged at the back of Tucker's legs, obviously frustrated that he had just missed two consecutive lay-ups.
A caller questioned whether Flip Saunders could be an effective recruiter of high school aged kids on the Sunday Sports Huddle (we call it the “Homer Huddle”). It was no surprise that Dave Mona came to his defense and speculated that he would “do an outstanding job of recruiting” if he were to be hired as the Gopher head basketball coach.
We witnessed some “Homer on Homer” crime in February when Sid Hartman chastised his WCCO radio colleague Steve Thompson for criticizing the Gopher mens basketball team for their lack of execution.
Sid Hartman also tried to deflect the leaking of Minnesota high school basketball talent out of the state with, “How do Indiana fans feel about Greg Oden leaving to Ohio State”?
Discussing the over supply of club seating with the local sport franchises, Dave Mona painted a rosy scenario that had the gopher football seats being sold out.
Channel 4 (WCCO/CBS) led their newscast with the news of Twins catcher Joe Mauer’s new contract.
After an embarrassing 91-65 loss to Dallas FSN’s Anthony LaPanta claimed the Timerwolves are not 20 points worse than the Mavericks.
On a note of surprising non-homer candor, Dark Star told an NBA agent that we really don’t know whether Flip Saunders can coach or not.
Channel 5’s Rod Simons earned the Homer of the Month with a double whammy. Early in the month while getting caught up in the Tim Brewster hype he suggested the University should give him a contract extension if he were to sign Cretin recruit Michael Floyd. Late in the month he told KFAN’s Henry Lake that the Twins have a “perfect” defense.
Bottom Line: There is no shortage of blind optimism coming from the “Grinch”.
