Homer of the Month June 2008

Who: See Below

We apologize for the delay in getting out the June’s winners.  Homer and his editors have been out sailing the Mediterranean and a little disconnected from the Minnesota sports press.  However, we still dug up some provincial material and let’s start with some reality takes:

Chad Hartman called Delmon Young a “flop”.  He also said the Wild organization was acting pretty “haughty” despite not making it out of the first round of the playoffs.

Patrick Ruesse described (the since released) Twins reliever Juan Rincon as “useless”.

Dan “Common Man” Cole called out the rest of the press for playing the “may have had a let down” after a loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

“The Wolves can’t win with this team” was declared by Sid Hartman.

In a rare moment of candor, Paul Allen said that Rip Hamilton and Chauncey Billips looked pretty healthy in the last game that knocked the Pistons out of the playoffs and ultimately got his Domino’s pizza partying pal Flip Saunders terminated.

Now for some homerish/outrageous takes:

A crazy assessment if there ever was one, Jeff “Bunny” Dubay suggested Yankee catcher Jorge Posada was a future Hall of Famer.

Trent Tucker called the firing of Flip Saunders a “bad deal” and stated it wasn’t Flips fault that his team did not make it to the NBA finals.

Normally uncompromised Chad Hartman sounded a bit to chummy in his interview with Wolves Coach Whitman and their yuking it up about Halloween costumes.

The VOX (Paul Allen) sold some hope to Timberwolve fans by claiming the newly acquired Mike Miller was a good an outside shooter as All-Star Ray Allen.

Notorious homer Mark Rosen reacted defensively to Chad Hartman’s mocking of Joe Mauer for sitting out a game vs. San Diego.

The increase in Hi-Definition television broadcasts of games was an alibi Sid Hartman used to explain why Vikings tickets sales were flat.

“Shooter” Walters wrote that Joe Mauer would be great at pitching to teammate Justin Morneau if he were to participate in the All-Star weekend’s home run contest.

Winner:  Sid Hartman suggested Vikings back-up QB Gus Frerotte could perform as good as any quarterback in the league save Manning and Brady.

Bottom Line:  Although not as big a homer as perceived by the general public, when the chips are down (and your staff is on vacation) you can count on Sid to step up with a homer take.
