Who: Paul Allen
What: Sid Hartman called former Gopher receiver Logan Payne the “sleeper in the draft”. He also said his own newspaper (Star/Tribune) was responsible for former Gopher coach Dan Monson losing out on some JUCO basketball recruits.
Mike Max suggested that with Purdue making the NCAA tournament the Gophers were “not that far away” from being a good team again. He also called Clem Haskins “a pretty good guy. I got to know him quite a bit.”
Star/Tribune beat writer Lavelle E. Neal speculated that Jason Bartlett and Jason Kubel were going to “really step it up” at the bottom of the Twins order.
Dave Lee called the Forbes article ranking Kevin McHale as the best general manager in sports as “intriguing”.
Darin “Doogie” Wolfson dismissed Coach Randy Whitman’s culpability after Jeff Dubay pointed out the difference between Dwayne Casey and his win/loss record this season with the Timberwolves. Doogie showed his partiality with “it’s not his fault”.
Sean Jensen voiced little concern about the possibility Vikings LB E.J. Henderson would be moved to the middle with “he will be fine”.
Star/Tribune writer Michael Russo stated the Wild was “due for a letdown” after clinching a playoff spot (after a loss).
The whole WCCO radio sports crew (save Dark Star) were giddy hyping the Tubby Smith hire as if John Wooden was coming to town.
KFAN’s Paul “Ducky” Allen earned the Homer of the Month with a couple crazy takes. First, he was in his “Benefit of the Doubt” mode by speculating about Twins pitcher Carlos Silva, “I think he’s going to have a good season…13,14,15 wins”. Secondly, during the NCAA men’s basketball tournament he called former Gopher J.B. Bickerstaff “a great college basketball player”.
Bottom Line: Quack-Quack, if you’re a local athlete P.A.’s got your back.
