Homer of the Month September 2007

Who: See Below

Paul Allen brown nosed Gopher Tim Brewster by claiming his tenure so far has been “nothing but good”.  He also provided cover for all the Gopher media apologists for the rest of the season by declaring, “I don’t care if they are gonna get killed”.

Mark Rosen jock sniffed Twins pitcher Johan Santana with this peculiar statement during the Chad Hartman show, “I don’t think his words have anything to do with his desire to leave”. This after Santana voiced frustration about the Twins organization.

Charley “Shooter” Walters promoted his pal Glen Mason by describing the supposed reverent way the Penn State players and alumni treated him during his visit there for the Big Ten Network.

Viking sideline analyst Greg Coleman evoked the names of Walter Payton, Eric Dickerson, and Bo Jackson when describing of the skills of Viking rookie Adrian Peterson.

The Star Tribune went way overboard espousing the career for Twins General Manager Terry Ryan including suggesting he help save baseball and according to Jim Souhan “was a master at what he did”.

Joe Sensor continued to be a shill for the Vikings coaches with, “I think they have a very good coaching staff”.

Kudos to Chad Hartman for offering up some needed reality by pointing out guard Steve Hutchison was not dominating like his colleagues in the media often suggest and stated Tim Brewster has “shown no ability to be a head coach”.

Sid Hartman mentioned the name Vince Young when describing the talents of Gopher QB Adam Weber.

Winner:  We determined two people deserved recognition for Homer of the Month in August.  First, Sid Hartman stated on the Sunday morning Sports Huddle (should be called Homer Huddle) that “Kevin McHale is as good of big man coach as there is”.  We can only imagine he was thinking about the improvement of former Wolves post men Dean Garret, Michael Olowokandi, Joe Smith, Rasho Nesterovic, Trevor Winter, Paul Grant, and Stanley Roberts among others.

Secondly, Gopher beat writer Chip Scoggins was up to his old tricks giving the casual fan the impression the maroon and gold gave Ohio State quite a tussle in a 30-7 loss. His post game article included this nugget “the Gophers gave a valiant effort, especially on defense” after allowing 30 points and over 450 yards of offense.  He also described the first half as “nip and tuck” and the headline writer played in to the bit with Golden Effort Goes for Naught.

Bottom Line: This demonstrates you could be asleep until the last day of the month and still garner some outrageous homerish takes from the Minnesota press (both of these occurred on September 30th).
