Who: Greg Coleman
What: Before we offer up the last few provincial takes of 2006, we want to thank the thousands of visitors to homersota.com this past year including the hundreds feedback comments that have added to the site content. We also wanted to go back a few months and recognize an under appreciated “non-homer” take by KFAN’s Dan Barreiro.
While taking some heat during the season, ex-Gopher football coach Glen Mason gave an interview to WCCO’s Mike Max. Maxie promoted the interview on radio with Esma Murphy and on a newscast with Jeanette Trumpeter.
Murphy refreshingly responded to Max regarding the short interview snippet that Coach Mason came across as “whiny” (no surprise Max made an alibi for Mason) while Trumpeter tried to ingratiate herself with the coach and fans by stating “he seems like a class act”.
Barreiro was the only media member to point out the contradictory impressions from the interview and pointed out that Trumpeter’s silly attempt to ingratiate herself with the coach and public was misguided and fell flat. He also joked that Murphy could get canned for that type of candor which would not sit well with the homers at WCCO.
Joe Christiansen shinned up the Twins organization by naming them the Minnesota Sports person of the Year including the assessment that they “never take themselves too seriously” while dismissing their playoff failure vs. Oakland.
WCCO radio’s Eric Nelson made a bizarre attempt at deflection after the Gopher’s Insight Bowl collapse by suggesting if they played a double-header, the Gophers would win the second game.
However, we felt compelled to give the years final H.O.W. to Greg Coleman after the many requests by visitors to the site. During the Vikings final season loss to St. Louis, the sideline analyst boot-licked the team by stating that the Vikings “were twelve plays away from a 10-6 record”.
Bottom Line: Could Mr. Coleman have been misquoted and actually claimed the Vikings were “twelve penalties per game away from a 10-6 record”?
