Who: Glen Crevier
What: This week the partisanship continued regarding the surging Twins. Sid Hartman dismissed Twins DH Rondell White's ineffectiveness by suggesting he was hitting the ball well but "they're just not falling". Paul Allen called Joe Mauer "the best hitter in baseball" (Albert Pujols who?), and Rod Simons was on KFAN stating "I think the Twins can make the playoffs" (a little hope selling). This just scratches the surface regarding Twins hype but the H.O.W. comes from a behind the scenes journalism professional.
The Star Tribune offered Gopher football coach Glen Mason prime inside cover space to write about the newly legislated football stadium. Even the most strident Gopher fan would describe this as a sugary and cliche ridden prose including "but first and foremost, I am a resident of the Land of 10,000 Lakes". References to mosquitoes hungrier than linebackers (obviously not than Ohio State's, Michigan's, Penn State's, or Iowa's), Goldy's natural habitat, and the banal mentioning of 1950's stars Giel and the McNamara brothers.
Some may regard Coach Mason himself as this week's winner. However despite his trite writings, he is not a trained journalist and is expected to promote his own cause to the public (his disingenuous "As anxious as I am for the upcoming football season to begin" did bring a smile).
That leaves us with the individual responsible for sports section content. Star Tribune sports editor Glen Crevier permitted this cornball public relations piece to be part of the June 19 copy.
Bottom Line: Could all the football season ticket ads (placed by the University in the Star Tribune sports section) have influenced the insertion of this propaganda piece?
